Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading charity that empowers young people to harness their personal and business skills. We work directly with young people, their teachers and parents, businesses and influencers to build a successful and sustainable future for all young people and society at large.

Through our hands-on employability and financial education programmes and resources and teacher training, we want to eradicate youth unemployment, help young people realise their potential beyond education.

We believe that all young people should be given the best chance for a rewarding future in work and life – no matter where they start their journey.

With the support of Oldham Enterprise Trust we work with young people within the area on a range of enterprise and entrepreneurship activities. With their support we are able to reach young people and help them in developing their skills through our hands-on activities.

Our Company Programme gives young people the opportunity to set up and run a student business under the guidance of a business volunteer. Young people make all the decisions about their business, from deciding the company name and product, to creating a plan, selling to the public at trade fairs and ultimately winding up the company. All this takes place with the support of a volunteer Business Adviser who brings a wealth of business knowledge and expertise.

The Tenner and Fiver challenges are national competitions that provide a highly interactive, fun way of introducing financial numeracy, resilience and teamwork in learning for both primary and secondary pupils. They are pledged either £5 or £10 and have one month to set up a mini student business and create a product or service they can then sell or deliver at a profit and engage with their local community.

We also provide hands on interactive day programmes looking at Career pathways in our Learn to Earn Programme and CV writing and interviews in our Employability Masterclass.

All the activities that we are able to provide in the area with the support from Oldham Enterprise Trust allow young people to develop and work on eight key skills Communication, Confidence, Financial Capability, Initiative, Organisation, Problem-solving, Teamwork and Resilience as well as building the knowledge and attitude to succeed.

In previous years the young people in Oldham have had great success through the Company and Team Programme. We have had young people from New Bridge representing Oldham in London at the National final. A young person had received the Sir John Moores award at a county level and had been nominated for the national award. The whole team had also won the National Team Programme Best Advertisement Competition. Recently North Chadderton have also received recognition and won The Entrepreneurship Awards and represented the UK at the awards event in Tallinn, Estonia.

Currently this year we are working with schools and centres throughout the Oldham Area. We are working with Oldham Hulme Grammar, Mahdlo, Oldham Academy North, Oldham College, Oldham Sixth Form College, New Bridge, Newman RC College, Crompton House School, The Radclyffe School, Saddleworth School, North Chadderton, The Hathershaw College, and Oasis Academy.

Our upcoming events in the area are the Oldham area showcase being hosted at Oldham College on the 27th of March 2018. This event will allow the teams participating in the Company Programme to showcase their student business and compete for the chance to represent Oldham at the Greater Manchester in April.

We are always looking for volunteers to step in to the role of Business Adviser for our company programme teams or on the day programmes we deliver. Each of the volunteering roles is unique and can be flexible and work to fit what is best for you. Working with students from the age of 11 upwards is both a rewarding and fun experience. You will be developing your skills whilst participating in these programmes but will also have the chance to extend your network as you meet others who are volunteering with us.
